Cafe Spotlight: The July Edition Okinawa, Japan

Summer is finally here! But Okinawa doesn’t seem to know it. It’s been gloomy & dreary, not to mention very wet this season. Very unlike typical Okinawa. This weather may be limiting you from going out and exploring, but don’t let it stop you from exploring wonderful cafes! What better way to remedy these blues than to eat them away!

1. Green Leaf Cafe Yomitan

Are you looking for a little dose of green? This cafe has got you covered - from organic coffee to delicious smoothies, buddha bowls, and other wonderful vegan/vegetarian options! This has been one of my favorite cafes since moving to island. My two favorite go-to items are the tempeh cutlet and beet smoothie! Try there acai/pitaya bowls as well!

2. BETTER GIRL OKA

I came across this new cafe on instagram. And the moment I saw it, it just gave me all the Seattle cafe vibes (my hometown), so I had to check it out. Located near the city center of Naha, it would be a great lunch stop while exploring the city. They offer a diverse and yummy brunch menu alongside craft in house made drinks. If you’re into the moody hipster feel with a dash of bright interiors, this is the place for you. Come enjoy their signature Shakshouka: a cast iron simmered poached eggs in an aromatic tomato chili pepper garlic base. Doesn’t that sound splendid?

3. Taco Maria

This new taco joint has been plucked directly from SoCal and planted here in Okinawa! They are really upping the taco game, introducing ceviche on tostadas and Mexican street corn, as well as some OG favorites like carnitas and bulgogi tacos. This place is “TEXMEX” in a nutshell. This will make for a super trendy & fun lunch outing with your amigos. The stunning mural and decor really teleports you to Cali. Take a quick vacay from Oki to the west coast (the best coast LOL). My personal favorites were the ceviche and fish tacos! Super fresh and delicious!

4. Bloom Coffee

This adorable cafe nestled away in Yomitan lives up to its name, Bloom Coffee. The whole property and space is surrounded with greenery and life. Stop here for a perfect little retreat from your busy day. Enjoy a cup of coffee and dive into your favorite book. They also feature a variety of local vendors and showcase artwork around the walls. Take a breathe, sip, relax, and enjoy your time here.

5. Captain Kangaroo

Captain Kangaroo’s has been on my list of burger joints to check out since moving to Oki, and every time we’ve attempted to go, the wait has been too long so we passed and settled for something else. The burgers come highly recommended and by the consistent long wait times at all times of the day, there must be a reason for the madness!? Finally had to make the effort to stop and try it for ourselves. On the ever going quest to finding the best burger on island, this place did not disappoint. Their menu is a bit funky and nontraditional in the American sense, but we are a long ways from home. We ordered the sparky & cheese cheese burger, and out of the two, I think the sparky was better. It had a juicier patty with more fulfilling bites. The fried pepper cheese was great as well but that burger lacked fresh vegetables, which is a personal preference for me. Now having tried a good share of the burger spots on the island, this restaurant takes a high place on the roster.
