Welcome to this months cafe spotlight. I’ve got you covered from hipster to something more traditional - so sit tight and lets get started!

1. Aguri Ramen

It has been a cold and rainy spring so far in Okinawa. Weather definitely affects my food choices. All I want to do is be huddled over a piping hot bowl of delicious ramen to warm my soul. This small ramen shop is a one woman show, owned and operated by Taka San, a sweet and talented lady, serving up (IMO) the best damn bowl of Tantanmen in Okinawa. Tantanmen is a Japanese take on the dan dan noodles, a spicy Sichuan noodle dish. Aguri’s ramen will clear your sinuses and your hunger. A must try if you are a ramen fanatic!

2. Aien Coffee & Hostel

A hipster haven located near the seawall. If you are looking for a chill spot to have a cup of coffee, work, people watch, have a meal with friends, or grab a beer - this is just the place for you. Serving up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can always count on a good bite at this artsy cafe. This cafe is more for leisurely enjoying, so if you are in a rush you might want to consider other options. The dishes are made to perfection, which may take longer than what most people are used to. BUT I can attest and say it is well worth the wait. All their menu items are fresh & delicious, so try one, try it all! *PSST* THEY HAVE AVOCADO TOAST just saying…

3. Cafe Pipineo

This cafe is already popular amongst locals and for good reason! Tucked away in Uruma, you’ll drive down a narrow gravel road that will lead you to this cafe. The atmosphere is perfect for a spring afternoon, with seating outside and plenty of greens and natural light boasting through the windows. Check out the stained glass and jewelry in the front, stay for the scrumptious food and desserts. Snag yourself a cinnamon roll to-go and treat yourself later, you’ll thank me!

4. Cafe Fuju aka Cafe Lodge

This cafe holds a special place in my heart. It reminds me a little of home, channeling the woodsy vibes of the PNW. This amazing house has survived many typhoons but had to be closed for awhile for renovations. They are now open and have restored the the beauty of this wonderful space. It is perfect little getaway from our busy city lives. Breathe in some fresh air, take in the beautiful views of the ocean, and get in touch with mother nature. Come and enjoy a meal ranging from hamburger steak to curry, but do not leave without trying their cheesecake! It is semi-sweet and dense like NY cheesecake with a almond crust topping. This is the perfect retreat to revive your tired soul.

5. Ufuya

More commonly known as the 100 year old house this unique restaurant is a gem of Okinawan history. These houses were built in 1901 and were restored and preserved in 2001. It evokes a sense of nostalgia with the red clay roofs and tatami rooms. Run through the red gateways that mimic the Kyoto Fushimi Inari Shrine torii’s. Dine on traditional Okinawan Soba and other Ryukyu cuisine while listening to the calming sounds of the waterfalls. This is the ultimate Okinawan experience! Make sure to check how busy they are before arriving as this is a popular tourist destination.
